Ms. O

On behalf of the Burns faculty and staff I welcome you to our website. Thank you for taking the time to visit and I hope you find the information user-friendly and beneficial.

We are all so excited about the new school year. Through high expectations, motivation, a challenging curriculum, and a positive and safe school environment, we know our students will achieve success. This school year, you will see changes in the staff, curriculum, schedule and our school as a whole and we anticipate great achievement gains/growth with the implementation of these changes. Burns is now a school that prides itself on providing world-class instruction; creating strong teacher, student, parent, and community relationships; and instilling in children the ability to think, to learn, to achieve, and to care.

Our entire staff is dedicated to continuous learning through professional development and use of school achievement data to discover the most effective ways to teach our students. We have high expectations for our students, our colleagues, and ourselves through trust, hard work, and positive reinforcement of our collective strengths.

We strongly believe that parent and community partnerships are an essential piece to the success of a school.  When parents volunteer they enrich the experiences of all our children on a daily basis.  The Burns P.T.A.  is a tremendous support and contributes significantly to the warm, inviting atmosphere of Burns. P.T.A. works directly with staff to coordinate the activities of our volunteers; helps plan useful, well-run services such as welcoming events for new and returning families, Open House, and student performances; provides valuable funding for classroom support; and meets regularly to further support school activities. The school/parent relationship is a vital, essential piece to our success. If you would like additional information regarding our parent/guardian leadership opportunities please contact us – We need your support and involvement!

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share my excitement about beginning my second year as the principal of Burns Elementary School.  I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of the Burns family and to continue to strengthen the focus on student learning, a commitment to high expectations, innovation and collaboration.

Let me share some information about my educational background and professional experience.  I have an Associate of Arts Degree from Anderson University, a Bachelors Degree from The University of South Florida, a Leadership Degree from The University of Georgia, and a Masters degree from Winthrop University.  After teaching nine years, I served as an Assistant Principal for three years and a Principal for seven years in the metro Atlanta area. In July of 2008 I relocated to Charleston to continue my service to others as a school leader. I have completed two institutes of study at Harvard Graduate School of Education.  Knowing the importance of life-long learning enables me to instill that in all my children and staff.

As the principal at Burns, I truly believe that the success of our students evolves from a strong relationship between the school, students, parents, and the community. I encourage you to become involved in your school and express any concerns and/or ideas with me. Together, we will achieve success!
